What is the best way to select an infant car seat?

My wife and I have two small boys, ages 7 and 4. The oldest is in a booster seat, while the other is in a car seat. We used the following approach to determine which car seats to purchase and have been very pleased. Consider where you are going to position the car seat in the back seat. Will it be behind the passenger, the driver, or in the middle? Depending on the location, determine if your vehicle has the metal clips (usually under the seat) that allow you to clip the seat in. This is in addition to buckling the car seat. If so, you want to look for a car seat that has this feature. Consider purchasing car seats that have lighter color fabrics and some type of pattern. The lighter colors will help the unit stay cool in the summer time, this is especially important if you live in a part of the country with extreme heat. The pattern will help prevent stains from showing quite so bad over time. Most all models allow the fabrics to be removed and are washable, but be sure to check that the fabric is removable. You don’t want to be stuck with a nasty stain that you can’t do anything about. The most important thing I would suggest is to check out product reviews on the models you are considering purchasing. These are easily found on the internet and there is nothing like the brutal honesty of the consumer to help you firm up or rule out a model you are considering. People will go to alot of effort to get the word out if there’s a model that’s wonderful or if one is especially hard to maintain, etc. Good luck.
